I'm not sure exactly what it was that didn't quite endear me on that first visit - maybe it was the endless palm oil plantations, possibly the log covered beaches on the east coast, probably the sus rent-by-the-hour cheapie hotel we found ourselves staying at (for an extremely short time) or very definitely, it was when - just after crossing the causeway border at Johor Bahru - Mal found himself being marched off to a holding room and facing a big fine for dropping his butt on the (already littered) sidewalk. He swears he tossed it to the bin but must have missed. Either way, our first trip to Malaysia was one of trepidation of possibly never returning again. That was twelve trips ago!
Malaysia is electric, vibrant and stunning. A shooting star, racing along embracing progress where it's capital has gone from a 'tin town to a golden city'.
